The votes are in, and we are thrilled to share the results of our very first Caring Places Life-Skills Station Competition! During the month of September, 15 communities worked hard designing and building creative new life-skills stations to enrich the daily lives of our residents. Each community was given one month and $500 to either create a brand-new life-skills station or refresh an existing one. Families, friends, staff, and community members then had the chance to cast their votes for their favorite design—and the results are in!
Before we reveal which community is taking home the $1,500 prize, we’d like to take a moment to reflect on what life-skills stations are and why they matter so much in memory care.
What Are Life-Skills Stations?
Life-skills stations are interactive areas designed to spark memories, encourage independence, and provide comfort for those living with memory loss. From folding laundry and gardening, to setting a table, or even imaginative themes like a baby nursery or travel corner, these spaces recreate familiar moments that bring purpose and joy. They are more than just an activity; they offer dignity and connection, giving residents the chance to participate in routines that feel both meaningful and comforting.
At Caring Places, we know that small moments of connection add up. Life-skills stations are one way we live out our mission: by helping residents find comfort, familiarity, and purpose each day. This is why it is so important to continue updating these stations based on current residents’ needs. As our residents change, so do their unique interests, hobbies, and challenges. Life-skills stations help us address these changes in an empathetic and resident-centered way.
And the winner is…
We were so impressed by all 15 life-skills stations that were created, and we know it wasn’t easy to pick just one winner. With over 880 votes cast across 15 participating communities, one stood out from the rest. And without further ado, congratulations to…
Creekside Place Memory Care, with an incredible 217 votes!
Creekside Place won the gold with their “Under The Sea” themed life-skills station. This aquatic station was designed to spark memories of visiting the aquarium and provide mental stimulation, as well as a calming seating area for residents to relax in. There are plenty of engaging elements to see, touch, and hear—including a large fish tank with colorful décor, an under-the-sea tapestry, sea life wall decorations, hanging jellyfish, a fishing game, a sound machine with soothing ocean waves, and a variety of sensory items to explore.
Amanda Gogas-Delaware, Administrator, shared:
“We hope that everyone at the community—residents, staff, and family alike—can all enjoy being at the aquarium again.”
The new space has already been a hit, creating moments of peace and joy for all among the relaxing, underwater-inspired scenery.
Recognizing All Participants
We are so proud of the creativity shown across all Caring Places communities. Every team that participated poured their hearts into building spaces that will have a lasting impact on residents. From cozy homelike setups to playful themed environments, each station brought joy in its own unique way.
